Who is ISO 22000 relevant for?
ISO 22000 is intended for organisations that want to demonstrably control food safety across the whole chain. ISO publishes the standard. It aligns with HACCP principles as explained by the NVWA . Certification runs through accredited bodies under supervision of the RvA (Dutch Accreditation Council) .
Rule of thumb: if a food safety incident directly leads to recalls, claims or loss of customers, ISO 22000 is usually commercially and operationally relevant.
ISO 22000 at a glance
| Organisation type | Relevance of ISO 22000 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Producers and processors | Very high | Direct risk to product safety and recalls |
| Ingredient suppliers | High | Customers ask for demonstrable control in the chain |
| Food-contact packaging | High | Influences contamination and migration risk |
| Storage and logistics | Medium-high | Temperature, traceability and handling are critical |
| Foodservice and catering | Medium-high | Process control and hygiene determine the risk |
When can ISO 22000 deliver a lot of business value?
ISO 22000 usually delivers the most business value if you:
- supply large retailers or international buyers;
- receive RFI/RFP questions about food safety more often;
- export to markets with stricter purchasing requirements;
- lose margin through rejected products, complaints or rework.
Catering and foodservice require a separate consideration. For consumer-facing activities, the hygiene code is already legally sufficient. If ISO 22000 still becomes interesting for catering, read the page ISO 22000 for catering.
When can you wait with ISO 22000?
Postponing can sometimes be sensible if you:
- are still in an early product development phase;
- have little process stability and first want to set up basic KPIs;
- do not yet experience customer pressure or supply chain requirements around certification.
Once customer questions become structural, starting later is usually more expensive because of time pressure.
