NEN 3140 / SCIOSInspection costs

NEN 3140 and SCIOS inspection costs

A NEN 3140 inspection or SCIOS Scope 8 inspection of a small business premises costs from about €350 to €600 excluding VAT. A SCIOS Scope 10 inspection for fire risk starts at about €350 to €400 and rises to €2,500 for large buildings. Inspecting electrical hand tools costs about €6.50 to €11.50 per item. The price depends mainly on the number of distribution boards, the floor area and the sector.

These are indications from published prices of inspection companies and an insurer, not fixed rates. There is no national rate for NEN 3140 inspections. For details on what is checked, read NEN 3140 inspection and SCIOS Scope 10. You can find certified companies in the SCIOS register .

All amounts on this page are indications, published by providers in 2026 or earlier. Always request at least two quotes for your own premises. The cost of repairs comes on top.

Inspection companies name the same factors each time. Knowing them helps you understand why two quotes can differ so much.

Worked example: NEN 3140 and SCIOS for an SME

A fictional installation company has premises with an office and workshop, three distribution boards and 60 pieces of electrical hand tools. The insurer requires Scope 10. This is how the budget looks, based on the indications above:

ItemIndicationHow often
Scope 8 inspection, three distribution boardsAbout €420 to €840Every 3 to 5 years
Scope 10 inspection, medium-sized premisesAbout €500 to €900Every 3 to 5 years, according to the policy
Inspection of 60 hand toolsAbout €390 to €690Yearly or more often
Repair of defectsUnknown until after the inspectionAfter each inspection

In the year of the major inspection, this company therefore comes to about €1,300 to €2,400 excluding repairs. In the years in between, only the tool inspection remains.

How to save on inspection costs

  • Combine Scope 8 and Scope 10. Interpolis mentions a combination discount of up to 40%. Other inspection companies also plan both in one visit.
  • Keep diagrams up to date. Then the inspector does not have to work out how the installation is built.
  • Gather the tools in one place. That takes less time than walking through the whole company.
  • Have your own VP inspect. With a designation and measuring equipment, this can be cheaper if you have a lot of tools. Do include training and calibration in the calculation.
  • Set well-founded intervals. An office does not need inspecting as often as a building site.

Hidden costs of NEN 3140

The inspection itself is often not the largest item. Also consider:

ItemWhy
Repair of defectsAn installer charges their own hourly rate and materials
DowntimeSome measurements require a short switch-off of circuits
Training of IV, VP and VOPCourses and refresher courses for the people you appoint
StandardsIf you want to read NEN 3140 or NEN 1010 yourself, you buy them from NEN
Time of the IVPlanning inspections, following up repairs, keeping documentation

Common mistakes when comparing quotes

  • Looking only at the starting price. Ask what is included: how many distribution boards, thermography, report, re-inspection.
  • Forgetting VAT. Not every provider states whether prices include or exclude VAT.
  • Not checking the SCIOS certificate. Your insurer may not accept a cheap inspection without a certificate for Scope 10.
  • Not budgeting for repairs. Reserve budget for the findings.
