ISO 50001 subsidies and tax benefits

ISO 50001 helps you not only save energy, but also benefit from subsidies and tax benefits. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) ) runs several energy saving schemes: the EIA (Energie-investeringsaftrek, energy investment allowance)  for tax deductions, SDE++ (Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition)  for sustainable energy, and ISDE (investment subsidy for sustainable energy and energy saving)  for insulation. This article gives a complete overview of what is available and how ISO 50001 helps you with applications.

ISO 50001 is not a condition for subsidies, but it significantly increases your chance of success. You can show that investments are part of a structured plan, not ad-hoc purchases. This carries weight when subsidies are allocated.

Which schemes are available? Overview

Below are the main energy saving schemes for 2026 at a glance. For each scheme you see what it is, who it is for, and roughly what it delivers. The amounts are indicative. Always check the current conditions with the RVO .

SchemeWhatFor whomBenefit (indicative)
EIA Tax deduction on energy-saving business assetsCompanies (corporate income tax or income tax)40% extra deduction from taxable profit (2026)
SDE++ Payment for sustainable energy and CO2 reductionCompanies, institutionsFixed payment per kWh/GJ, 12-15 years
ISDE Subsidy for insulation, heat pumps, solar water heatersSMEs (MKB) and householdsFixed amount per measure
MIA and VAMILExtra deduction and free depreciation for environmental investmentsCompanies (Environmental List)27-45% extra deduction (MIA) and a cash flow benefit from deferred tax (VAMIL)
Energy taxReduced rate for large consumersEnergy-intensive companiesUp to tens of thousands of euros per year

Below we discuss each scheme in detail, with examples and how ISO 50001 strengthens your application.

1. EIA (Energie-investeringsaftrek)

What it is: The energy investment allowance (EIA) is a tax scheme that lets you deduct an extra 40% of your investment in energy-saving business assets from your taxable profit in 2026. The conditions, the reporting deadline and a more detailed calculation example are on EIA subsidy: how the energy investment allowance works.

Example: You invest €100k in LED lighting with sensors (on the Energy List).

  • EIA deduction: 40% = €40k
  • Your taxable profit falls by €40k
  • At 25.8% corporate income tax, you save: €40k × 25.8% = €10.3k in tax

This is not a subsidy (you do not receive money) but a tax benefit (you pay less).

Conditions for the EIA

1. The investment must be on the Energy List The government publishes the Energy List (Energielijst) every year. It shows which investments qualify. Examples:

  • LED lighting with daylight or motion sensors
  • Heat recovery from process water
  • Frequency converters for electric motors
  • High-efficiency boilers
  • Solar panels (limited, mainly for SMEs)
  • Insulation materials for industrial applications

Always check the current Energy List on RVO.nl .

2. The investment must be new No second-hand equipment (with exceptions).

3. Business investment You use the asset for your business, not privately.

4. Minimum investment: €2,500 A minimum of €2,500 per notification. Maximum per company: €155 million per year (Energy List 2026).

How to apply

Timing: You notify RVO of the investment within 3 months of placing the order. You claim the deduction itself in your corporate income tax or income tax return.

Process:

  1. You place the order for the investment
  2. You notify RVO within 3 months via eLoket
  3. RVO decides, usually within about 8 weeks
  4. You include the EIA in your tax return
  5. You pay less tax

ISO 50001 benefit: If the Dutch Tax Authority (Belastingdienst) asks “Is this really necessary? Is this really efficient?”, you can refer to your energy policy, SEU register and action plans from ISO 50001. This strengthens your application.

Costs: None, the application is free. I would still recommend involving an accountant, who can make the best use of the deduction.

2. SDE++ (Stimulation of Sustainable Energy Production and Climate Transition)

What it is: SDE++ is a subsidy scheme for sustainable energy production and CO2 reduction. You receive a payment (€/kWh or €/GJ) for the sustainable energy you generate or the CO2 you reduce.

For whom: Companies, institutions and organisations that invest in:

  • Solar panels (PV)
  • Wind turbines
  • Biomass boilers
  • Heat pumps (industrial)
  • Heat-cold storage (WKO)
  • CO2 capture and storage

How it works: You receive a fixed payment per kWh or GJ for 12-15 years, depending on the technology. This covers the difference between the cost of sustainable energy and the market price.

Example: You install 500 kWp of solar panels on your roof.

  • Investment: €300k
  • Annual yield: 450 MWh
  • SDE++ base amount: €0.06/kWh for 15 years
  • Annual SDE++ payment: 450,000 × €0.06 = €27k per year
  • Total over 15 years: €405k

On top of that, you save on your energy bill (450 MWh at €0.12 = €54k per year). Total saving: €81k per year.

Conditions for SDE++

1. Minimum investment This depends on the technology. For solar panels: from 15 kWp (around €10k investment).

2. Application through a tender system SDE++ works with application windows (usually 2-3 per year). You submit an application, RVO assesses it, and if you fit within the budget you receive approval.

3. Investment decision not yet taken You may not have ordered or installed anything before you apply for SDE++. Preparatory work, such as getting quotes, is allowed.

4. Realisation period After approval you have 3 years to realise the project (depending on the technology).

ISO 50001 benefit for SDE++

Higher chance of success: SDE++ applications are assessed on several criteria. One of them: “Is this part of a structured energy plan?” If you have ISO 50001, you can show this with:

  • An energy policy with a commitment to sustainability
  • An energy review showing that this investment has priority
  • Action plans that include this investment

This raises your score. When applications exceed the budget (oversubscription), this can make the difference.

Monitoring and reporting: After approval you must report each year how much energy you generate. With ISO 50001 you already have a monitoring system, so this happens automatically.

How to apply

Process:

  1. Check the application windows on RVO.nl SDE++
  2. Calculate your business case (investment, yield, SDE++ payment)
  3. Submit your application during an application window (often competitive, first come, first served)
  4. RVO assesses it (2-4 months)
  5. If approved: realise the project within the deadline, report annually, and receive the payment

Costs: €0 application costs. Hiring an adviser for the business case and application (€3k-€8k) often pays off, because it raises your chance of success.

3. ISDE (investment subsidy for sustainable energy and energy saving)

What it is: ISDE is a subsidy for smaller sustainability investments, aimed at SMEs (MKB) and households. You receive a fixed amount per investment.

For whom: SMEs (MKB, fewer than 250 employees) and households.

What is subsidised:

  • Insulation (cavity wall, floor and roof insulation)
  • HR++ glazing
  • Solar water heater
  • Heat pump (homes and business premises)
  • Biomass boiler
  • Energy-efficient climate control

Subsidy amounts: Fixed amounts per measure. Examples (2025):

  • Cavity wall insulation: €20/m²
  • Floor insulation: €15/m²
  • Roof insulation: €20/m²
  • HR++ glass: €20/m²
  • Heat pump (air/water): €2,000-€4,500

Example: You insulate 500 m² of roof on your business premises.

  • Investment: €15k
  • ISDE subsidy: 500 × €20 = €10k
  • Net own contribution: €5k
  • Energy saving: €3k per year, so a payback period of 1.7 years

Conditions for ISDE

1. SME or private individual Large companies (more than 250 employees) are not eligible.

2. Certified installer The measure must be carried out by a certified company (RVO-certified).

3. Property in the Netherlands The building must be located in the Netherlands.

How to apply

Process:

  1. Request a quote from a certified installer
  2. Submit your application to RVO (online via eLoket)
  3. RVO decides within 13 weeks
  4. If approved: have the work carried out within 24 months
  5. Submit the invoice and proof
  6. RVO pays out the subsidy

Note: The ISDE budget often runs out quickly (first come, first served). Submit as early in the year as you can.

4. Discretionary depreciation of environmental investments (VAMIL)

What it is: With VAMIL you can depreciate environmentally friendly business assets faster for tax purposes. You decide when you depreciate (discretionary), instead of a fixed percentage per year.

Benefit: You can fully depreciate the investment in year 1. This significantly reduces your taxable profit and defers your tax. This improves your cash flow.

Example: You invest €200k in a biomass boiler (on the Environmental List).

  • Without VAMIL: depreciate over 10 years = €20k per year in tax deduction
  • With VAMIL: fully depreciate in year 1 = €200k in tax deduction in year 1
  • At 25.8% corporate income tax: €51.6k less tax in year 1 (instead of €5.2k per year for 10 years)

You ultimately pay the same amount of tax, but later. This gives a liquidity benefit.

What qualifies: Investments on the Environmental List (Milieulijst), which RVO publishes every year. Examples:

  • Energy-efficient equipment
  • Sustainable energy generation
  • Water-saving installations
  • Emission-reducing technology

Combining with the EIA: According to RVO, you can indeed combine VAMIL with the EIA. The environmental investment allowance (MIA) and the EIA cannot be combined for the same costs. How MIA and VAMIL work together, with a calculation example, is explained on MIA and VAMIL.

How to apply

Process:

  1. Check whether the investment is on the Environmental List
  2. Place the order for the investment
  3. Notify RVO within 3 months of placing the order
  4. RVO assesses the notification
  5. Claim the discretionary depreciation in your tax return

Costs: Free application.

5. Tax benefits: lower energy tax

For energy-intensive companies (EIB status) there is a reduced rate on energy tax.

What is EIB status: Companies whose electricity or gas tax exceeds €10,000 per year can apply for EIB status. You then pay a reduced rate on energy tax.

Benefit: Depending on consumption and tax bracket, this can save €20k-€200k+ per year for large consumers.

ISO 50001 benefit: For EIB status you sometimes have to show that you actively save energy. ISO 50001 is the ultimate proof of this.

Applying: Through the Dutch Tax Authority (Belastingdienst), using a separate form.

6. Green loans: more favourable financing

Banks increasingly offer green loans with lower interest rates for sustainable investments.

Examples:

  • ABN AMRO Sustainable Loan
  • ING Groene Bedrijfslening (green business loan)
  • Rabobank Duurzaamheidslening (sustainability loan)

Benefit: 0.25-0.75% lower interest than a standard business loan. On a €200k loan over 10 years, this saves €5k-€15k.

Condition: You must demonstrate that the investment is sustainable. ISO 50001 certification helps here, because it shows commitment.

Applying: Through your bank, when you apply for a business loan.

7. CSRD and green financing

If you prepare a CSRD report (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) (large companies, 250+ FTE or €50M+ turnover), this can indirectly bring financial benefits:

Access to green bonds: Investors prefer companies with strong ESG scores. ISO 50001 improves your E (Environmental) score.

Lower cost of capital: Companies with good sustainability performance often get lower interest rates or better terms when raising capital.

Strategic approach to subsidies for ISO 50001 investments

1. Combine schemes Example: investing in solar panels.

  • SDE++ for a long-term payment
  • EIA for a tax benefit (note: sometimes the two cannot be combined, so check the conditions)
  • Green loan for a lower interest rate

2. Timing matters

  • SDE++ windows are competitive, so get in early
  • The ISDE budget runs out quickly, so submit at the start of the year
  • You claim the EIA in your tax return, so plan investments with tax in mind

3. Use ISO 50001 as evidence For every subsidy application:

  • Refer to your energy policy
  • Show the SEU register (this is a priority)
  • Show the action plan that includes this investment
  • State that you are certified (this shows commitment)

This noticeably increases your chance of success.

ROI examples with subsidies for ISO 50001 investments

Example 1: LED lighting in a factory

Investment: €50k (LED + sensors) EIA benefit: €50k × 40% = €20k deduction, so €5.2k tax saving (at 25.8% corporate income tax) Energy saving: €15k per year Net investment: €50k - €5.2k = €44.8k Payback period: €44.8k / €15k = 3.0 years After 5 years: €75k saved - €44.8k investment = €30.2k net positive

Example 2: Solar panels of 200 kWp

Investment: €140k SDE++: €12k per year for 15 years = €180k in total Saving on own consumption: €24k per year (200 MWh at €0.12) EIA: limited for solar panels (check the current Energy List), estimated at €5k Net investment: €140k - €5k = €135k Annual return: €12k (SDE++) + €24k (saving) = €36k Payback period: €135k / €36k = 3.75 years After 15 years: (€36k × 15) - €135k = €405k net positive

Example 3: Insulating a business premises (SME)

Investment: €30k (roof, cavity wall, glazing) ISDE subsidy: €15k EIA benefit: €3.5k tax saving Net investment: €30k - €15k - €3.5k = €11.5k Energy saving: €8k per year (gas and electricity for heating) Payback period: €11.5k / €8k = 1.4 years After 5 years: €40k saved - €11.5k investment = €28.5k net positive

Step-by-step plan: using subsidies alongside ISO 50001

Step 1: Identify promising measures Use the energy review from ISO 50001. Which SEUs can you tackle with investments that are eligible for subsidies?

Step 2: Check the available schemes

  • Is it on the Energy List (EIA)?
  • Is there SDE++ for it?
  • Does it fall under ISDE (if you are an SME)?

Step 3: Calculate the business case including subsidies Total investment - subsidies - tax benefits = net investment. Net investment / annual saving = payback period.

Step 4: Apply in the right order

  • SDE++ and ISDE: apply before you invest
  • EIA, MIA and VAMIL: notify within 3 months of placing the order, and claim when you file your return
  • Green loan: when you apply for financing

Step 5: Realise and report Carry out the investment within the deadline, keep all invoices, and report to RVO where required.

Step 6: Monitor results in ISO 50001 Measure the effects (EnPIs) and report them in the management review. This shows that subsidies have been used effectively, which is relevant for future applications.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I combine the EIA and SDE++ for solar panels? A: Always check the current conditions. They are often combinable, but not for the same part of the investment. Get advice from RVO or your accountant.

Q: Do I need ISO 50001 to get the EIA or SDE++? A: No, ISO 50001 is not a condition. But it helps with complex applications or competitive tender systems (SDE++).

Q: Are there subsidies for implementing ISO 50001 itself? A: Not directly. Some provinces do have innovation subsidies that ISO 50001 may fall under. Check your regional development agency.

Q: What if my investment is not on the Energy List? A: Then it does not qualify for the EIA. Check whether it is on the Environmental List (VAMIL) or qualifies for SDE++, which has different criteria.

Q: How often is the Energy List updated? A: Every year. Always check the current list on RVO.nl before you invest.
