ISO 55001 costs and timeline
An ISO 55001 project costs money for external support, certification audits and your own hours. How much depends on your organisation and your starting point. There is no fixed price list, so a quote is the only reliable way to know the amount.
You can find the standard itself at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) . To read what happens in practice during certification, see the step-by-step plan. A certification body, such as Kiwa , will prepare a quote tailored to you.
Always request at least two quotes before you make a choice. Prices and conditions differ per provider and per organisation.
What does an ISO 55001 project cost?
The total has three parts: external support, the audits by the certification body and your own time. The table shows which items appear in most quotes. Ask with every quote which items it includes.
| Item | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Gap assessment by an adviser | A check of what you already do, against the standard |
| Support with implementation | Help with policy, register and SAMP (strategic asset management plan) |
| Staff training | Training for the team |
| Stage 1 audit (document review) | Assessment of your documents by the certification body |
| Stage 2 audit (on-site practice audit) | Check on site that the system works in practice |
| Annual surveillance audit | Yearly check after certification |
| Recertification after three years | New certification round after the three-year cycle |
| Asset register or software tool | Ask suppliers for a quote |
| Own hours of the project lead and staff | Time that is not on an invoice, but still costs money |
Your own hours are often a larger part than the external costs. Include them in your calculation. Think of time for the register, the management review and fixing findings.
Why the price differs per organisation
The price depends mainly on three things: the size of your organisation, the complexity of your asset portfolio and your starting point. A grid operator with thousands of kilometres of cable sits at a different amount than a municipality with a few buildings.
The scope also plays a part. Do you manage one site, or several sites with different asset types? The latter needs more audit days and therefore more money.
Example calculation for a fictional drinking water company
A fictional drinking water company with three pumping stations asks for quotes for the gap assessment and the audits. It places the quotes side by side, item by item, using the table above. Training and own hours are often not in the first quote. Ask about them, so you do not end up with a lower price and hidden costs.
How long does an ISO 55001 project take?
The timeline depends on where you start. A project from zero, without an existing management system, takes longer than an organisation that only needs to formalise what it does. Ask your certification body or adviser for an estimate for your situation.
If you already have a working management system under ISO 9001, you have less to build. Your own gap analysis shows where you stand.
The steps within that time:
- The system must run for a period and produce evidence before the audit can start.
- The internal audit takes a few weeks, plus the time to resolve findings.
- The certification decision follows the stage 2 audit.
What to show in your budget
A fair budget has four blocks: external support, certification costs, your own hours and a reserve for fixing issues. The reserve is needed because the gap assessment and the audits produce findings. Fixing them costs time or money.
Also check what the quote does not include. Ask whether training, a second stage 2 audit in case of major nonconformities, and the asset register are included.
Frequently asked questions about costs and timeline
When do I pay for the surveillance audit?
Every year, until recertification after the three-year cycle. Ask the certification body for the schedule and the costs before the first audit.
Can I reduce the costs with my own team?
Yes. For the gap analysis, the register and the policy, you can do a lot yourself. You always pay the certification audits to the certification body. On the audit process page you can read which audits you cannot skip.
How long is an ISO 55001 certificate valid?
Three years, with annual surveillance audits. After that, recertification follows. Ask the body what it costs, so you can include it in your budget on time.
